Mile End – review
We first heard about this joint that serves Montreal smoked meat from Rahm Fama’s show on the food Network, Meat & potatoes. It’s run by an expat Canuck.
It’s supposed to be the only place in NY where you can find Montreal smoked meat! Yes, you heard right! Because we love Schwartz’s in Montreal, we really wanted to test their smoked meat to see if it’s up to par!
We both ordered the smoked meat sandwich which came to a hefty $12 each! The sandwich was not very big and I thought I saw the cook weighing out each sandwich. Weird!
The verdict: the spices in the meat were really pronounced but the smoke was missing. Hubby thought that it had a nice smoke flavour and would even venture to say that it was equal to or even better than Schwartz’s. I totally disagree!
The resto was half empty at noon on a Tuesday but it started to pick up after about 10 minutes so there wasn’t any ambiance to speak of.
Btw, I have to tell an anecdote. Halfway through our meal, a girl came in in gym clothes and ordered a smoked meat sandwich. She then proceeded to methodically separate the fat from the meat. Mile End should offer 2 cuts of meats for their customers – lean and fat.
On the whole, the smoked meat sandwich was ok but not worth coming all the way to Brooklyn for. To each his own I guess and now I won’t take Rahm Fama’s recommendations to heart!
