Maze by Gordon Ramsay – review
I had stopped writing negative reviews but because of our experience at Gordon Ramsay’s Maze, I just had to write this negative review. Having heard so much about the man, I wanted to see if his food lived up to his reputation. Unfortunately, it didn’t!
We had the 4-course tasting menu for £25 and it was a waste of our time and money! The menu looked really interesting on paper but because the execution wasn’t there, we felt really let down and a bit angry, to be honest, as we expected better food. One could argue that 4 courses for £25 is a steal and I would agree, if the food had been good.
We decided to go for the savory dishes as we didn’t want to miss out on Ramsay’s genius!
I opted for the duck and foie grass terrine, black pepper poached pear, fresh walnuts, and Sauternes gel as my first course. The terrine was quite good but I couldn’t taste the black pepper on the pear. The Sauternes gel was quite mild and nothing to write home about.
We both had the beetroot soused mackerel, horseradish potato salad, granny smith apple jelly. The mackerel was very red in colour but fortunately, didn’t have too much beetroot taste as I couldn’t stand the taste. However, the potato which was to have horseradish but all I could taste was beetroot. The jelly was fine but didn’t add anything to the dish.
We also had the grey mullet, courgett, coco beans, tomato and lemongrass broth. The fish was fine but the broth was AWFUL! It tasted like it was made by someone who hasn’t a clue of how Asian flavours should taste. This dish ruined the whole dining experience for us!
The next dish that we both had was the pork belly, razor clams, Savoy cabbage, jalapeno and miso dressing. Hubby’s pork belly skin wasn’t crispy at all and he couldn’t eat the pork as it was too fatty! I enjoyed mine but couldn’t finish his pork as in the end, I too found it too fatty as well!
Hubby had the partridge all to himself! This dish came with pearl barley, Brussels sprouts, and parsnip. The partridge was very tender and quite mild in flavour. I wish that I had taken this dish as well as it was one of the better dishes!
The freshly baked bread came with two different butters, a lemon flavoured and a salted butter. I couldn’t stop eating the lemon butter. Thank God we asked for extra bread because without it, we would’ve left the restaurant still hungry!
The service was disruptive as everytime hubby took a sip of his wine, it was filled up again. He got kinda paranoid that the waiter was standing right behind him and we had to stop our conversation each time the wine was filled. If this is Michelin service then we don’t want any part of it.
The toilet wasn’t too clean!
Another thing that irritated me was the cover charge of £2 per person. What? We had to pay to eat here??? We already paid the 12.5% service charge which they totally didn’t deserve as the service was under par!
